Following Kumawood actor and musician Lil Win’s involvement in a car accident resulting in the death of a three-year-old child, private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has cautioned that Lil Win could face a prison sentence of up to five years if found guilty.
Lil Win has been charged with careless and inconsiderate driving and was granted bail of GH¢50,000 with two sureties.
Mr. Kpebu, speaking on Joy FM, highlighted that while fines are common in such cases, imprisonment is a possibility, especially considering the seriousness of the accident and the loss of life.
“In terms of penalties, imprisonment is possible, but fines are typically imposed. However, in particularly severe cases, imprisonment can occur, and it can be up to five years,” he explained.
Mr. Kpebu stressed the necessity of imposing stricter penalties to deter reckless driving in Ghana, where road accidents claim over 2000 lives annually.
He argued that a tougher sentence would send a clear message and contribute to enhancing road safety.
“We don’t often charge them with manslaughter. So, is it reckless, dangerous driving, etc.? Yes. Over the past decade, more than 2000 people have died annually in road accidents. Yet, we don’t see drivers being imprisoned for years,” he remarked.
Lil Win was granted bail by the Asokore Mampong District Court after his arrest, which occurred shortly after he was discharged from the hospital. The arrest followed an accident involving a vehicle he was driving, resulting in the tragic death of a three-year-old boy.
The family of the deceased has been advocating for justice, with Lil Win facing charges of dangerous driving and negligently causing harm.
