Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced plans to establish a new teaching hospital in Cape Coast and its surroundings.
This forthcoming medical facility, akin to the University of Ghana Medical Centre, will be located within the University of Cape Coast campus.
Dr. Bawumia shared this initiative during a meeting with the Central Regional House of Chiefs, concluding his two-day visit to the region on Monday, June 4.
The proposed hospital aims to serve as an advanced medical and research center, offering training, research, and top-tier patient care services not only to the Central Region but also to neighboring areas.
Highlighting the pivotal role of health in the economy, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the government’s commitment to improving the health status of all citizens, irrespective of their background or political affiliation.
He stressed the importance of bolstering local capacity within the healthcare sector, stating that reliance on other nations for healthcare support was unsustainable.
Underlining the government’s dedication to health, Dr. Bawumia cited the Agenda 111 project, which aims to establish a hospital in every district, with 87 hospitals currently under construction nationwide.
Moreover, he outlined his digitalization campaign’s impact on healthcare accessibility, including hospital networking, medical drone deployment, and the establishment of an e-pharmacy platform.
Dr. Bawumia praised the efficiency of digitalized medical records within public health facilities, which has reduced queues and delays while enhancing accessibility.
Looking ahead, he proposed integrating medical records and patient history into a centralized database accessible by networked hospitals to facilitate seamless information sharing.
Dr. Bawumia also commended the National Health Insurance Scheme’s (NHIS) improved services due to digitalization, including combating fraudulent claims and enabling mobile phone-based registration renewal.
The commitment to establishing a new teaching hospital in Cape Coast underscores the government’s dedication to enhancing healthcare accessibility and fostering a healthy populace
